How to analyse Search Console performance by query, page, country, and device

Use Search Console filters to investigate changes by query, page, country, and device without mistaking an aggregate average for a single ranking.

A site-wide performance chart can show that clicks changed without explaining where the change happened. Start with a question, then narrow the dataset until the numbers relate to a useful page or query group.

For example, a consultant investigating Jordan visibility should separate the target service page, relevant query phrases, and country data. The overall website average includes other topics and audiences.

Choose the property, search type, and dates

Open the intended property and Performance report. Confirm whether you are viewing Web, Image, Video, or another available search type. Choose comparable periods and account for incomplete recent data.

A week-on-week comparison can be affected by weekday mix, seasonality, and unusual events. Use a longer baseline when the shorter period contains too little data to interpret reliably.

Read the metrics together

Clicks show result clicks, impressions show appearances, and CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Average position is an aggregate of the topmost result under the relevant grouping, not a fixed rank for every search.

A growing set of lower-position impressions can move the average while an important query remains stable. Likewise, a change in query mix can change overall CTR without any one page’s snippet becoming worse.

Google’s Performance report overview defines the metrics and available grouping controls.

Filter the page and inspect its queries

Select a page or apply a page filter, then open Queries. Review the phrases associated with that page and compare periods. Check for a change in the kind of searches, not only the total.

A containing-term filter can isolate a phrase family. More advanced filters can group related terms, but retain the filter definition so the result can be reproduced. An overly narrow filter may exclude meaningful variations.

For a target such as SEO consulting in Jordan, distinguish commercial phrases from course or tutorial queries. They represent different reader needs and should not all be sent to the same page.

Compare countries and devices

Use country and device dimensions to locate the change. A service page gaining impressions globally does not establish that it is improving in the intended local market.

Within a country, inspect the relevant page and query group again. Average position can still cover varying searches and locations. Do not report a guaranteed national ranking from one aggregate number.

Reconcile the chart and visible rows

The chart and table can have different aggregation and data limitations. Privacy-related query omissions and row limits can prevent visible query rows from summing to the chart total. This is not a reason to invent the missing queries.

Use date rows to locate a change, search appearance when relevant, and an export for further grouping. Preserve the search type and filters with the file. The long-term storage guide covers retaining these datasets beyond an ad hoc analysis.

Turn the analysis into a page decision

If a relevant service page appears for the intended queries but receives few clicks, inspect the search result context and page promise. If the wrong page appears, review content overlap and internal links. If impressions disappear after a technical change, investigate indexing and responses before rewriting copy.

My technical SEO consulting service connects performance changes with the underlying pages. For local commercial visibility, SEO consulting in Jordan focuses that investigation on the market and service intent.
