Technical SEO

Crawling, indexing, and server log analysis

I investigate which URLs search engines can discover and crawl, how those URLs respond, and where important pages are missing from the available search data. Projects can combine server logs, crawl exports, sitemaps, and Search Console to understand the behaviour of a large website.

The work behind the service

Understand patterns across page types

A website with millions of URLs needs analysis at more than individual-page level. Categories, filters, expired listings, and parameter combinations can behave differently. I group the relevant URLs and compare the available evidence so your team can decide which behaviours to preserve, change, or investigate further.

Scope and deliverables

What I can work on

We agree on the scope after reviewing your requirements. A project can focus on one of these areas or combine the relevant work.

URL inventory and grouping

Bring together the relevant URL sources and group pages by template or function. Normalise the fields needed for comparison and record gaps in the available datasets.

Crawl and log analysis

Analyse requests, response codes, page groups, and relevant crawler activity. Where bot identification is needed, we agree on an appropriate verification method for the dataset.

Indexability investigation

Review canonical handling, robots directives, sitemaps, pagination, and internal links alongside available Search Console information. Investigate patterns behind important pages being excluded or overlooked.

Handling rules and monitoring

Document the agreed behaviour for each affected URL group and prepare validation checks. We can define recurring monitoring where the necessary data and integrations are available.

Working together

How the project works

  1. Gather the relevant evidence

We identify which logs, URL inventories, and search reports are available.

  2. Compare page groups

I look for differences in discovery, requests, responses, and indexability across the relevant templates.

  3. Define and validate changes

We prepare handling requirements and check the implementation with your team.

Experience and related work

Published work on large-scale log analysis

My Python and MySQL tutorial walks through collecting access logs, preparing the data, grouping page types, and storing results for analysis. The article is a work sample; any implementation for your website would be reviewed against its current requirements.

Questions about this service

Do we need server logs to start?

They can add useful evidence, but the available scope depends on your data. We can first review crawls, sitemaps, URL inventories, and Search Console, then identify what logs would help investigate.

Will you automatically noindex pages with no traffic?

No. We need to understand the page purpose, available data, and wider website requirements before recommending how a URL group should be handled.

Can this become a recurring monitoring workflow?

Yes, if the data sources and access support it. We can separately scope collection, scheduled checks, alert thresholds, and reporting.
